AT Oberon Council's meeting last week, mayor Kathy Sajowitz proposed that the new independent living units in Curtis Street be named the "Leath Johnston Units".

In her report to council it said that Althea Tamar Johnston (Leath) lived in Oberon for 100 years and in her later life was a long-time resident of Hathaway Cottage.
When she passed away in 2009, she bequeathed $100,000 for the provision of residential accommodation and the like for the care and comfort of the elderly and disadvantaged.

That bequest was a significant contribution to the construction of the new Curtis Street units, which are now nearing completion.
It was considered naming the complex after her was a fitting recognition.
During the debate, an alternative motion was put forward to name the four older units in Curtis Street after another Oberon identity. Following the meeting, however, it has been identified that the four original units in Curtis Street are in fact named "Nurse Fox House".
The matter will again be discussed at Oberon Council's September meeting.
