A woman who lost her uninsured home in a house fire suffered a further blow when unregistered firearms were found in the destroyed property, leading to her being charged. Kylie Maree Sim had rushed back into her burning home on Dickson Street in Woomargama on September 10 last year as it filled with flames. The wildlife rescuer had been trying to retrieve registered rifles, which she needed for the wildlife work, about 7.30pm and was eventually pushed back by the smoke. She was charged by police after they found two old unusable rifles which had belonged to her late father, who died in 2010. MORE COURT NEWS: The weapons were discovered, in pieces, some time around 2014. In a further blow, she had believed the home was insured but later discovered it wasn't. The property was gutted. Ms Sim said she didn't realise the weapons, which were unable to fire a shot, needed to be registered. She wiped away tears in Holbrook Local Court recently as the events, described as "a perfect storm", were detailed. The court heard Sim had volunteered for WIRES for five years and had been trying to retrieve the registered guns from her home in case any of her animals were injured and needed to put down. Sim has otherwise been a responsible gun owner for several years. Magistrate Tony Murray noted it was a set of "very, very unusual circumstances" which brought her before court, and would usually go undetected. He imposed a three-month conditional release order. Mr Murray said he hoped the authorities would consider her circumstances and allow her to keep her firearms licence.
