Sorenstam and Sagstrom shot a five-under 65 in alternate shot play at Midland Country Club on Wednesday for a share of the first-round lead with Pauline Roussin and Dewi Weber.
"It is different because it's a team format," Sorenstam said.
"It's nice to see your name on the board somewhere.
"I just try to focus on my game and do what I can with the skill set I have today."
The 51-year-old Sorenstam is making her second LPGA Tour start of the year and only her third since retiring after the 2008 season.
The teams will play better ball Thursday and Saturday and alternate shot again Friday.
Sorenstam missed the cut in the US Women's Open last month, then tied for fourth last week in Nevada in the mostly male American Century Championship.
"I really didn't feel any pressure from my partner," Sorenstam said.
"I just felt good about most of the shots, there were a few that obviously could have been a little better ... but overall, it was calm golf."
Sorenstam and Sagstrom, played alongside Lexi Thompson and Brittany Altomare, with the Americans shooting 71.
The teams of Jodi Ewart Shadoff-Emma Talley, Jillian Hollis-Lauren Stephenson and Pornanong Phatlum-Pavarisa Yoktuan shot 66 followed by Allison Emrey and Katherine Perry-Hamski with 67.
One shot behind them, in a tie for seventh, is Amy Olson and Australian teammate Katherine Kirk.
Seven-time major winner Karrie Webb and American Alex Marina shot 69 for a share of 12th, along with Australian Sarah Kemp and Alena Sharp and sisters Nelly and Jessica Korda.
Defending champions Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn shot 73.
