Some of the wise old owls got out early on Thursday because they fear rain might hamper the game later in the day.
Eighteen played the 12 holes on Thursday. Don Miller showed he still has some good golf in the bag and won the day.
Anthony Borton, in his last game at Oberon before moving on, was nearest the pin. Balls went to Tim Arnison, Glen Murray, Hamish Gidley-Baird, Phil Cummings, Barry Stubbs, Paul Behan and Eric Whalan.
The inclement weather on Saturday morning was a deterrent to many of our regular golfers. Even though it was the first round of the Club Championship only a small field of 23 ventured out.
While it was showery it was not cold, the course was in great shape, the greens were running true, however, there was absolutely no run on the fairways.
Eric Whalan was the sponsor of the first round, sponsoring each grade. A grade handicap is 0-11, B grade 12-17 and C grade 18 and up.
A and B grade will be stroke winner and runner-up while C grade will be stroke winner and Stableford winner. Due to the rain on Sunday making the greens unplayable the Championship has now been reduced to a fifty-four hole competition.
The dampness on Saturday was not conducive to good scoring, there was only one player playing to his handicap. The winner in A grade was Barry Lang 83/72, Wayne Sellers was the runner-up.
Adrian Poulten had a good round to win B grade with a fine score under the conditions of 85/71. Laurie Murphy was the runner-up on a countback with a round of 93/76.
Nearest the pin on the 7th hole was Anthony McGrath, he was on the green but not very close. Luke Christie Johnston was closest on the 17th.
Balls went to Jason Sargent, Rob McGrath and Darren Gordon.
Next Saturday the seeded group in A grade is Rob McGrath, Jason Sargent, Barry Lang and Dom York. Tee time is 10.45am.
The B grade seeded group to hit off at 11am will be Adrian Poulten, Eric Whalan, Peter Hutchinson and Laurie Murphy. The C grade group will be Phil Cummings, Kevin McGrath, Dave Campbell and Matt Foran hitting off at 9.30am.
