However while many find home maintenance therapeutic, others avoid doing odd jobs at all costs.
For some, it's a case of simply hating housework, let alone fixing that leaky shower or rotting boards on the deck. Others don't feel equipped to take on those trickier tasks, while many of us are simply time poor - especially if weekends are spent driving kids from one activity to the next.
As people have become busier, so too has the rise of outsourcing household chores and a greater shift towards DIFY (Do It For You).
Mez Graham identified this trend and in response launched the app Fix it Faster, connecting home owners with local service providers by identifying which ones can help most quickly, and perhaps who might even be conveniently nearby.
"Fix it Faster was born from my passion in putting the power in the hands of consumers to quickly find and book the services they need," says Mez. "From cleaners and plumbers to hairdressers, the app aims to streamline the home management jobs that are best outsourced to qualified professionals."
According to Mez, while there are key chores you should take care of yourself (no one else wants to remove that hairball from your shower), outsourcing home maintenance is an increasingly popular option that can save precious time and effort.
So what jobs should you outsource and what should you do yourself? Mez says daily or weekly tasks such as ironing, gardening, washing the dishes and the car can easily be done around your daily schedule and maintained yourself.
She adds that occasional and more-time consuming chores such as paint touch-ups are a household chore you could easily attempt on your own in order to save money.
There are some jobs however that are best left to professionals, for safety reasons, or when it's legally required. "Rather than do more harm to your house or hurt yourself by taking home improvements into your own hands, outsource through an on-demand app such as Fix it Faster," says Mez.
"The top tasks you should invest in getting help with are often infrequent or emergency-situation jobs - think electrical problems, plumbing, pool servicing, floor refinishing, and mould/pest eradication."
