At about midday on Monday, December 16, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) detected a distress beacon registered to a light plane in the national park, police say.
A NSW Ambulance helicopter located the aircraft and a paramedic was winched down to the site and located the pilot, a man believed to be aged in his 70s, and the sole occupant of the plane.
He was dead, police say.
A crime scene has been established by officers from Chifley Police District and POLAIR and Police Rescue officers will retrieve the body.
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner, police say.
