Nathan Gardner has a great story to tell his friends at school.

It's about his birth - nearly 10 years ago on the side of the Pacific Highway.

On November 28, 2009 Nathan's mum Jodie was in the passenger seat of a vehicle, while her girlfriend was frantically trying to get her to Port Macquarie Hospital. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Nathan couldn't wait to arrive and the women were forced to pull over on the Pacific Highway at Herons Creek. They flagged down a bus to help.

Little did they know the bus would be full of trained firefighters, who just happened to be on a bucks party.

The men, from Sydney and Newcastle, were on their way up the coast to enjoy the sunshine for the party at Crescent Head.

"This lady flagged us down and so we stopped to see what was happening," Newcastle resident and groom-to-be Joe Hastie told the Port News in 2009.

"It was certainly unexpected. We just tried to keep her calm and made sure everything was okay."

Jodie was embarrassed at the time, but 10 years down the track said she couldn't have been in safer hands.

The men helped to make Jodie feel as comfortable as possible - holding their towels up to shade her from the sun and giving her ice from their esky.

The men called NSW Ambulance for assistance during the delivery.

"They were saying push and keeping me awake. They did everything perfectly," Jodie said.

Paramedics arrived soon after Nathan was born. Jodie and her son were taken to Port Macquarie Hospital to be checked over.

Jodie remembers hearing the cheers of the men, as they celebrated the birth with beers.

"They were probably more proud than I was at that point," she said.

Nathan's long name - Nathan Robert Joseph Gardner - is a tribute to the men who assisted in his birth.

Jodie hopes one day she'll be able to meet the men who helped her that day.

"I'd love to be able to see them again," she said.
