A notice of motion was carried at last week's ordinary meeting for council to give $1080 to help interested local young people meet the financial requirements to join the Ozy Youth Choir - Oberon Mob.

In mayor Kathy Sajowitz's report to councillors, she said the Ozy Youth Choir - Honouring the Defence Services (formerly the RSL Youth Choir) mantra is music, heritage and leadership.

"It's more than a choir; the project is a leadership development program for young people under 25 years of age," her report said.

Cr Sajowitz's report said the project originated from the re-enactment of the Kangaroo March, which was part of the Anzac centenary commemorations during 2015.

As the march passed through the original small rural towns and communities, young people were encouraged to form into small choirs called mobs.

"These mobs then continued to connect online, becoming part of a wider national project," her report said.

"This unique online system of connecting and practising means that no matter where you live, you can be part of the Ozy Youth Choir.

"The mobs come together throughout the year at combined performances, camps and commemorative events. The project is a combination of vocal training, leadership, confidence and team-building skills for our young people."

The Oberon RSL Sub-branch was approached earlier this year about creating an Oberon Mob.

A rally day was held on May 19 to officially form the Oberon Mob.

Young local musician Chloe Swannell has been appointed the Oberon Mob leader and, to date, the group has three members and interest from other young people.

Cr Mick McKechnie commented, saying he thought it was a worthwhile project to support Oberon's young people.

The $1080 will come from the residual Section 356 Donation 2019/20 budget and the assistance will be managed through the community services department.
