The celebration was held at the Oberon RSL Club.
Many of those who attended travelled a long way to be at the function, including Mrs Spence’s brother Ron, who came from Charters Towers in North Queensland as a “surprise” guest.
Mr and Mrs Spence, who have lived in Oberon for 38 years, were married at St Jude’s Church, Bowral on January 31, 1959.
They have four children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and each have longevity in their family – Mr Spence is from a family of nine, all of whom are still alive and many of whom were at the anniversary celebration, and Mrs Spence is from a family of four, all of whom are still alive as well.
They received cards from the Queen and prime minister in recognition of their anniversary.
And their tip for a successful marriage? To communicate with one another and work together.
