ONE long-term fluoridation supporter in last week’s Oberon Review expressed concern at the widespread criticism of council’s decision to fluoridate and perceived shortcomings in the process, and indicated that: “Of the 600 or so emails, letters, phone calls and valid petition signatures which were received by council, approximately 60 per cent were opposed and about 40 per cent were in favour. However, 86 per cent of the adult population did not express a view to council.”

Interestingly, from council’s own business papers, it was in fact 68.5 per cent against and 31.5 per cent for.
The writer’s ‘approximation’ seems rather rubbery in favour of fluoridation, if not contradictory, considering the same writer espouses the accuracy of the figures from the Social Research Centre (SRC) survey that contacted only 371 people.
Wouldn’t that also mean close to 95 per cent of the adult population didn’t express a view to the SRC?

Another fascinating fact is that of the mere 371 people surveyed by the SRC, from their own data, 244 don’t drink the town water (ie out of town and on tank) and only 126 did.
The percentage for and against it was averaged for both groups, which means factually it was near twice as many people for fluoridation are not drinking the town water.
Why did the SRC survey focus on so many people who are not directly affected by fluoridation? Two-thirds of their survey participants don’t drink the town water.
A discussion seminar on the legalities of water fluoridation will be held at the Oberon RSL on August 26 at 10am. All are invited who wish to look at this important matter specifically and consider the way forward.
This will include detailed information from other community groups in NSW battling against water fluoridation. Truth will prevail.
