After more than a decade of weather watching, Marj is retiring

"In the beginning, I had to learn to read the wet and dry bulb for humidity, wind direction, wind speed, rainfall and cloud type,” she said.

“I was an observer only, but some residents felt I could predict the weather."

The bureau is now attempting to find a replacement for her, and anybody who has an interest in becoming Oberon's co-operative observer is invited to contact the bureau to find out more and possibly register their interest.

The role involves taking a number of readings at regular times and sending those observations to the bureau.

The bureau says the observation network is a very important part of its operations and provides a vital service to communities.

The bureau says it is possible to move the Oberon weather monitoring equipment, and an exact decision on that will be made after discussions with the person who takes over the role.

If the role is not filled by the time of Ms Armstrong's retirement, the bureau says a series of nearby local weather stations will be used to gather data from around the area.

Bureau of Meteorology NSW hub manager Alex Bewsher said the bureau thanked Ms Armstrong for her service and wished her all the best in her retirement.

"Marjorie and our other co-operative observers across NSW provide a vital service, not only to the Bureau of Meteorology, but to their communities, and we are now asking anybody in the Oberon area who may be interested in taking over this vital role to let us know,” he said. 

"You don't have to be a weather expert to be in one of these roles, so we're hoping somebody in the Oberon area will put their hand up to fill this important position quickly."

Oberon's rainfall has been recorded for the bureau since 1888 and temperatures since 1946. Statistics provided to the bureau are vital as they determine the long-term averages.
