Snowfall as low as 600 metres is a real possibility on Sunday, Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott says.
“It will extend a fair bit through the southern and Central Tablelands. The air mass is quite cold,” she said.
“There’s enough moisture [for snow]. It won’t be a lot of snow and it will be accompanied by some pretty gusty conditions, so if you’re going to take a look at the snow, check the warnings to see if any roads are closed.”
Mr Lander will be refereeing a Group 10 game between the Oberon Tigers and Cowra Magpies in Oberon on Sunday, where the top temperature is predicted to be just six degrees.
“I’m one of those people who wear shorts all year round,” he said.
“Your hands, your fingers, everything is cold. It impacts players and their ability to play and their ball skills.”
Mr Lander said there were a few tricks to staying warm when you are on a football ground in this type of weather.
“Try to keep moving as much as possible; don’t let yourself stand still and get cold. As soon as you stop, that’s when you break down and get colder,” he said.
“When you’re refereeing, the top part of your body is cold, but not so much for your legs.”
When asked if he would rather just spend the day indoors during such cold weather, Mr Lander’s answer was a firm “no”.
“I’ve been doing this for 18 years and I’ve got a lot of passion for it. It’s good fun,” he said.
