Mr Toole said both ladies deserve this accolade.
“Janet really is a quiet achiever. Earlier this year she was awarded Oberon’s Volunteer of the Year Award at the Australia Day function. She regularly helps out with catering at the Uniting Church and has assisted with Accessibility Living Options for more than 12 years as well as being a volunteer with Meals on Wheels,” he said.
“It is also well known that Janet uses her skills as a beautiful quilter to make quilts for charities. She has made more than 700 quilts for the neonatal unit at the Royal Women’s Hospital.
“Another example of Janet’s commitment to the wider community is the fact she has made more than 300 beanies for Beanies for Bangladesh.”
Mr Toole said June Evans has volunteered her time to many community organisations over many years.
“Every morning June sets out on a daily walk of over one hour and along the way she collects rubbish and litter from the roadside, taking it home and disposing of it, either as household rubbish or recycling,” he said.
“June also supports the local Catholic church as well as spending her Tuesdays helping out at the Oberon Public School canteen. Until very recently she has worked at the local St Vincent de Paul centre twice a week.
“She runs a weight loss support group called Slimliners every Thursday morning and members pay a small weekly fee which June organises for donation to charity.
“June also works to support the hospital auxiliary, cooking for street stalls and markets. Her spare time is spent knitting for the Wrapped with Love organisation.”
Mayor Kathy Sajowitz also congratulated the two award recipients.
“Volunteers add so much to the social fabric of our community and it’s wonderful to see Janet and June recognised in this way,” Cr Sajowitz said.
“Congratulations to both ladies, who have made a significant contribution to the Oberon community.”
