Council has received correspondence from NSW SES in relation to the relocation of the Burraga Unit SES to the vacant Burraga Public School.
Currently the Burraga unit headquarters are located in an old church on the corner of Lloyd and Rockley Streets in Burraga.
In accordance with section 17 of the State Emergency Service Act 1989, local councils are required to provide suitable facilities for NSW SES units.
The Burraga Unit NSW SES was originally established in 1984 and has 10 members some of which have been members since inception.
The old church at Burraga, where the Burraga Unit is currently housed, is in need of significant repair. The building is slowly falling apart and suffers contamination from dust, bird and vermin. This creates a potential WH&S risk for the volunteers from the unit who meet and train in the building on a regular basis.
The Burraga Public School has been closed by the NSW Department of Education and the building is currently vacant.
The volunteer members of the Burraga unit have written to council seeking support and assistance of Oberon Council to relocate the headquarters of the Burraga unit to the Burraga Public School.
A report from council's general manager Gary Wallace said that relocation to the school would allow the unit to operate from a better facility and also provide a better opportunity to train new volunteers.
