A good field played the Thursday afternoon competition in pleasant conditions. It was good to see Gareth Samuel, a seldom seen golfer, excel and win the afternoon’s round. Balls went to Peter Ryan, Richard Gear, Bob Slattery and Brian Balaam.
There was a strong field of 40 on Saturday, including four ladies.
The conditions were a big improvement on last weekend, but the scores didn't reflect that.
A grade was won on a countback by Terry Robinson on 38 points and Kim Rawlings was the runner-up, also with 38 points. In B grade, Luke Christie-Johnston had a solid round on 37 points and Steve Serong was the runner-up on 36 points.
Nearest the pin on the first went to Dennis O'Connell, Sean Mooney was closest on the seventh, Doug Collins claimed the ninth and Anthony McGrath the 17th. Balls went to Robyn Stapleton, Kath Mooney, Marty Hotham and Graham Hotham.
Rule modification: Reduced time for searching for a lost ball (from five minutes to three), affirmative encouragement of "ready golf" in stroke play; recommending that players take no more than 40 seconds to play a stroke. These changes are intended to increase the speed of play. More changes are coming January 1, 2019.
Golfers are reminded to stick to current cart paths while in their buggies and to keep well clear of the greens and surrounding banks.
The board of the Oberon Golf Club is seeking two new applicants to fill positions vacant dew to resignations. Applications can be found in the clubhouse or speak to current board members.
Golf next Saturday will be an 18-hole stableford event.
