THE windy conditions tested golfers’ ability to play on the hard, dry fairways. Saturday saw the third round of the championships. There were a couple of handy scores in A grade, with Barry Lang and Marty Hotham both coming in with 78 off the stick. Barry won A grade on a countback. Peter Griffiths won B grade ahead of his mentor Kevin McGrath, who was runner-up.

Nearest the pin on the first and ninth went to John McKinnon, Kevin McGrath was closest on the seventh at nearly 10 metres, while Steve Serong played a nice shot to 1.3m from the pin on the 17th. Balls went to John McKinnon, Brett Crichton, Mark Clarebrough, Justin Evans and Dylan Harvey.
Again, it was good to see the ladies out playing on Saturday. It would be nice to see a few more venture out to swell the numbers. Kath Mooney was too good for the field to win the round.
The final round of the DJ and BD O’Connell sponsored championships was played on Sunday. Going into the final round, there were five shots separating the top pair in A grade and six shots separating the top pair in B grade. Kevin McGrath had a good lead on stableford points in C grade.
Robert McGrath, needing to catch Rob Hayden in A grade, had a poor start on the first hole, but worked his way back into the contest over the course of the round. Rob missed a putt on the 18th that could have sent the A grade championship into a play-off, leaving Rob Hayden as club champion for 2018. The B grade championship was very similar. Eric Whalan needed to gain six shots on Brett Crichton and he worked his way back to within one shot, but was not able to catch Brett the B grade club champion. Kevin McGrath maintained his good lead in C grade to win with 72.
The final scores in A grade were Robert Hayden 316, Robert McGrath 317. In B grade, it was Brett Crichton 343 and Eric Whalan 344. Many thanks to our generous championship sponsors Dennis and Brett O'Connell. Golf next Saturday will be an 18-hole stableford event.
Relaxed rules in a bunker: there will be no penalty for moving loose impediments in a bunker or for generally touching the sand with a hand or club (still can't ground the club behind the ball). You can now take relief outside the bunker with a two shot penalty.
