Young Sportsperson of the Year went to Lachlan Gibbs, who has a long list of sporting accomplishments.
Gibbs began his junior football for the Oberon Tigers in 2009 and has received numerous perpetual trophies and awards.
More recently, he has played representative league for Group 10 (NSW Country Rugby League), where he has gained selection each year since under 12s.
In 2017, he was awarded 15 years swimming age champion and competed at NSW CHS state level athletics in discus.
In his favorite sport, rugby league, he was selected in the Schools Under 15 Eastern Rugby League Team, and went on to be selected in the Western Team and the Greater Western Team. He has been invited to several high performance camps as an identified player.
Gibbs received the Oberon Junior Rugby League Under 15s Best and Fairest Award in 2016 and 2017.
In August 2017, he was rewarded for his efforts and commitment when he received an offer to play with the Cronulla Sharks Harold Matthews Cup side in 2018.
Late in 2017, Gibbs gained entry into Endeavour Sports High for 2018 as part of its targeted sports program and has taken up this opportunity to pursue his dream.
Other nominees were Jorgia McFawn and Clare Mawhood.
Community event
OBERON District Little Athletics Community Carols in the Park received the Australia Day award for Community Event of the Year. In its third year, the Community Christmas Carols event has gone from strength to strength.
It was extremely well-attended and supported by local vocalists performing throughout the evening.
As well as a great celebration, the event helps raise vital money to assist in keeping the cost of registration down to ensure athletics is accessible for as many families as possible.
Other nominees were Oberon Tigers Rugby League Can Assist Day, Oberon Community and Farmers’ Markets, The Burraga Copper Challenge Endurance Ride and the Oberon Anti Amalgamation Group.
Team of the Year
OBERON Hot Shots under 11s netball team took out the Australia Day Sports Team of the Year award.
In 2017, the Hot Shots netball team were grand final winners in the Bathurst Netball Competition.
The scores were locked at seven goals apiece at full-time and in extra time, the Hot Shots piled on the pressure in true Oberon spirit to come away winners 9-8 in a thriller.
The team also achieved the highest average goal scoring for all teams in the junior competition.
The Hot Shots only lost one game all season. Two of the team members were selected in the Bathurst representative side.
The team members were Cady Coyle, Makayla Taggart, Kayla Luyks, Neive Hogan, Georgia Pincott, Zia Hoosman, Janae McKenzie and Sophie Murphy. Team manager was Monique Rawlings and the team was coached by Kathy Rawlings.
Other nominees were Oberon High School Rural Cup Team, Oberon C grade senior ladies netball team and Oberon Tigers Senior Rugby League Premier League team.
