GOLFERS have started the new year in strength.
There was a strong field of 25 golfers all looking forward to better things in 2018 as they hit off on Thursday.
Alan Cairney had a great day with the white ball, easily beating the rest of the contenders. Balls went to Bill Wilcox, Harold Lyme, Barry Stubbs, Graham Hotham, Peter Ryan, Lloyd Roots, Peter Dale and Brian Balaam.
We had a strong field of 43 players on Saturday, including a couple of ladies. It was nice to have the ladies join the Saturday competition. Hopefully more ladies will come and play on Saturdays in the future.
With a strong field and good golfing conditions, there were some very good scores recorded. With a good day and the company of his sister, Dennis O'Connell was the A grade winner with a fine round of 85/70.
Dennis won the A grade monthly medal and had nearest the pin on the ninth. Runner up in A grade was Robert Hayden with 76/71.
Robert also won the A grade scratch ball.
Billy Edwards loves a stroke round and with the fine score of 91/69 was the B grade monthly medal winner. The runner-up was Blake Miller, who is showing some good form and will quickly move to A grade.
Nearest the pin on the first was Adrian Poulten, Steve Serong showed us that his absence hasn't affected his skill and was closest on the seventh and Barry Lang took the 17th.
The A grade putting was won by Chris Lord with 29 putts and Harold Lyme with 32 putts won the B grade putting.
Golf next Saturday will be an 18-hole stableford event, and the ladies are welcome to join. If we have enough ladies, there will be a separate competition.
For those wanting to get into golf at the beginning of the year, Thursday afternoon 12 hole competition is just the place to start.
