U3A president Nancy Brown told the Oberon Review that “winning the Excellence in Health and Lifestyle category was a great honour, as well as a reward for the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the organising committee and the many volunteers who continue to offer their services to the organisation”.
The prizemoney the organisation received with the trophy will be put towards the cost of a table tennis table and equipment.
U3A offers more than 30 classes and activities each term.
The tutors or presenters come from the membership of nearly 200.
The final term for 2016 saw table tennis offered in a deliberate attempt to focus on hand/eye co-ordination and movement. According to the ABC’s Catalyst program, it is very useful in maintaining brain function.
U3A’s gentle exercise class, Balance ‘n’ Bones, which runs twice a week, has approximately 36 participants. This is a popular exercise program for mobile participants at all fitness levels. The workout can be performed at your own fitness standard and is designed to make you more flexible, have better balance and co-ordination and build bone strength.
“Our pilates classes, which also run twice a week, cater for over 20 people over the two sessions,” Nancy said.
U3A also has a weekly walking program and the aqua aerobics class has commenced with the opening of the town’s pool.
Of course, there are many more leisurely classes on offer, including scrabble, mah jong and bridge, as well as various cooking classes and the ever popular armchair travel, which regularly sees more than 25 people enjoying photos from other members’ trips.
In a deviation from the mainstream activities, this term a group of members headed down to Renzaglia Wines at O’Connell over three Wednesdays for an introduction to wine appreciation, led by local winemaker, Mark Renzaglia.
Nancy said that above all else, Oberon U3A has played a role in fostering friendships and promoting a real sense of community, sharing and belonging among the over 50s.
