The field was greeted by perfect weather, if a little warm, and the players were greeted at 9am with an actual shotgun start.
Roger Saunig, a visitor to the event each year, brings his firearm to officially start each edition of the event.
In all there were 58 professionals and trainees who were partnered by locals, members and juniors from The Sutherland Shire Golf Academy and The Stone Hedge Crew.
The official chaplain to the Australian PGA organised the event as he does each year, while the tournament itself celebrated not only 20 years of play, but 20 years of sponsorship from local business Bird Legal.
“That in itself is a truly remarkable feat and thanks go to Pat Bird and the team at his company for their generous support,” Oberon Golf Club spokesperson Barry Lang said.
“The course is a bit dry at the moment but the tees and the greens are in very good shape and it played well throughout the day.”
By the end of the competition, there was a tie at the top of the leaderboard and the joint winners of the event were two former trainees in Gary Nightingale and Richard Gallichan.
They each found their range early in their round and were able to record scores of two under 68.
Some of the local club members featured prominently in the amateur event.
Denis O’Connell had 38 stableford points to take out the A grade crown, while Ray Ross had a very good round and finished on 40 stableford points to clinch B grade. Troy Schultz was named winner of the junior category ahead of Josh Speechly.
