One option that has been discussed in the preliminary talks is the possibility of the community group raising 50 per cent of any likely purchase price, and the council putting up the other 50 per cent.
Grants would then be applied for to help pay for any necessary restoration of the art deco building.
The group plans to raise its share of any purchase price through a series of high-profile fundraising events.
The 77-year-old building has been put up for sale, with an auction scheduled by Ray White Emms Mooney for November 21.
The community group believes the hall can be restored to its past glory, when it was the centre of activity in the town, and that a comprehensive program of film, dancing, music, exhibitions and plays could be built up to justify the retention and improvement of the building.
“The building is a very important part of Oberon’s heritage, and it is important that it be retained and once again play a central role in the life of the town,” a community group member said this week.
“It needs to be given back to the people again.
“The council / community group idea is only one option for restoring the building to the community but, at the end of the day, it is unimportant who buys the building, so long as it is kept for the benefit of the town.”
The community group made an offer on the building earlier this year, before it was put on the market, but was not successful.
