Airspace closures possible for popular Gulf stopover.

The Australian Government has upgraded its travel advice for a popular Gulf stop-over and holiday destination.
A new warning has been issued for travellers going to Qatar as the internal crisis in Iran continues to cause instability in the Middle East.
Australia has upgraded its advice level from "exercise normal safety precautions" to "exercise a high degree of caution".
Smartraveller described the Middle East as "unpredictable" with ongoing conflicts that "could escalate tensions across neighbouring areas".
"This may lead to airspace closures, flight cancellations, and other travel disruptions," the warning said.
Around 40,000 Australians visit Qatar annually, a number that has grown steadily since the 2022 FIFA World Cup, according to the department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
In 2025, Virgin Australia began flying between the Qatar capital, Doha, and Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
Since late December 2025, Iran has been gripped by nationwide protests sparked by economic collapse and political grievances.
Thousands of casualties have been reported, and the Iranian government has implemented frequent internet blackouts.
In January, several major airlines (including Qantas) had to reroute flights away from Iranian and regional airspace.
"Demonstrations and protests may occur, and local security conditions can change rapidly," the warning read.
"Visitors should avoid all demonstrations and protests."
Smartraveller also warned of a possible terrorist attack in Qatar with the wider Gulf region experiencing more frequent attacks in recent years.
