A BBQ with friends and family. A morning yoga routine. An afternoon in the sun with a book you've been meaning to read for months. An outdoor deck can completely transform your home living experience and enhance the long-term value of your property, but it's critical that it is built properly.

It's important to first consider the overall structure of the deck and what materials are being used to help reduce long-term headaches like deck warping and improper drainage.

That's why a future-proof deck starts with the right foundation, including a reliable under-deck drainage system.

Trex® RainEscape® is an under-deck drainage system - which when coupled with a composite deck from Trex - helps protect the substructure of your deck from moisture damage to extend its lifespan and visual appeal.

How does Trex RainEscape work?

Trex® RainEscape® is an above-the-joist deck drainage system which provides 100 per cent protection of the deck substructure from moisture penetration.

Unlike other systems that install below the joists of a deck, Trex® RainEscape® uniquely installs over the joists, between the framing and the boards of the deck surface.

This application allows homeowners to safely and discreetly run gas and electrical lines between the deck surface and a soffit ceiling to power lighting, ceiling fans, grills, appliances and electrical components.

Moreover, an under-the-joist system allows water to run through the decking boards, over the joists, and into the drainage system below. When the joists repeatedly get wet, they will eventually rot.

Designed to optimise outdoor living spaces, the Trex® RainEscape® deck drainage system diverts water away from an elevated deck to create dry, useable space underneath that helps sustain the structure for years to come.

Choosing between composite or timber

While there are benefits to both composite decks and timber decks, there are a few distinctions between them.

The Composite decking from Trex is an innovative, timber-alternative material made from up to 95 per cent recycled wood fibres and plastic film. A composite deck offers the natural beauty and overall look of timber without the ongoing maintenance.

Unlike traditional wood, it won't warp, rot, or splinter, and requires no sanding, staining, or sealing, making it a durable and sustainable choice for Australian outdoor living.

Timber, on the other hand, has a natural wood look that perhaps can't be replicated. Hard woods like teak and jarrah are incredibly durable and can withstand weather conditions, but over time, will need to be maintained by sanding, staining or sealing.

Ultimately, both materials have their unique advantages and can provide a long-lasting and attractive decking solution for your home.
