A toddler is fighting for his life in hospital after the two-year-old was allegedly struck by a van while crossing a road with his father.

The two-year-old was riding his balance bike at a pedestrian crossing on Thames Promenade in Chelsea Heights, a suburb in Melbourne's south east, when he was allegedly hit at 9.10pm on August 25.

The child sustained serious injuries from the crash and remains in a critical condition, police said.
The driver of the white van, a 29-year-old man from Clyde, stopped at the scene and was arrested by police. He was interviewed and released pending further investigations.
The child's father was not injured, police said.
An off-duty police officer stopped to offer emergency care to the toddler while paramedics raced to the scene.
Detectives with the Major Collision Investigation Unit have established a crime scene at the intersection as the probe continues.
