Both the globes in a lamp standard near the St Stephen's Presbyterian Church have been smashed in an incident mayor Robert Taylor called "disappointing".
"Council is aware of the damage to the Howick Street heritage lamp standards and is looking into the matter," he said.
"Damage to these lamp standards is disappointing as they are a feature of the CBD that our community admires."
The council has not said whether the damage is believed to be deliberate or accidental.

The damage comes after the council recently restored a number of historic lamp standards across the city, at a cost of almost $121,000, which was grant-funded.
There are 105 lamp standards in total, located in George, William, Howick, Church, Russell and Keppel streets, as well as Machattie Park, Kings Parade and Chifley Memorial Park.
The lamp standards are a major element of 19th and early 20th century street "furniture", which the council says contributes to the historical character of Bathurst.
In addition to upgrades to the lamp standards, the council restored the Crago Fountain in Machattie Park at a cost of $237,000.
