Melva Gee had been a proud Liberal member for a decade. She'd even voted for Scott Yung, the party's candidate in the NSW seat of Bennelong, during this current election.
But on May 2, she was issued with a notice of expulsion. Her crime? The "public support" of independent candidate for Calare, Andrew Gee, who just happens to be her son.
Speaking to ACM about the decision, Mrs Gee admitted she was "shocked" to receive the letter.
"The branch that we belong to in Sydney knew we were coming here and they were saying 'good luck Andrew'," she said, speaking from Mr Gee's watch party at the Orange City Bowling Club on Saturday night.
"If a mother can't support her own son, then what's the world coming to?"

Mrs Gee had shown similar support during previous campaigns for her son while he was a member of The National Party.
However in late 2022, Mr Gee quit the political party over his support for the failed Voice campaign.
He is now contesting the seat of Calare again in 2025, this time as an independent candidate against the Nats and their candidate Sam Farraway.
The letter sent to Mrs Gee said she had a right to appear the decision.
"But do I want to go back into the Liberal Party?" she pondered.

Despite the news coming one day prior to election day, Mrs Gee did not let it deter her.
"I'm not going to let it affect me and I'm still going to go out and support my son," she recalled thinking.
"It made me even keener to go out and support my son. Show them that I'm a supportive mother."
