Promises, promises: election sweeteners put to the test

Updated April 4 2025 - 3:31pm, first published 1:07pm

Which election promises do you like the sound of so far?

Is a $5-a-week income tax cut from next year, with another to follow, doing it for you?

Or does halving government fuel excise over the next year to make the average tank of petrol about $14 cheaper get your motor running?

Before the 2025 federal election was called for May 3, almost 8000 Australians took our online survey and nominated the issues that will matter most when they cast their vote.

Across the ACM network, which publishes this masthead and stretches into every state and territory, voters put the cost of living as the number one election issue.

Now, with the official campaigning now under way, we're keen to explore which policies and promises peddled by the major parties have resonated with you so far and are likely to influence who you will vote for.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has repeatedly described Labor's tax cut as "modest", with most Australians to be saving roughly $5 a week in the first year of the change and $10 a week after that.

"Whether you're a truckie, a teacher or a tradie, whether you're in manufacturing, mining or the care economy, you will earn more and keep more of what you earn," Mr Chalmers said.

Coalition leader Peter Dutton says halving the fuel excise to 25 cents per litre for a year would result in a saving of $14 on a typical 55-litre tank of petrol or about $700 a year for those who fill up about once a week.

"For tradies and everyone that's travelling in from outer suburbs to work in the city or running kids around to sport on the weekend, this will be relief for them," he said.
