This could be the perfect year to tick Kakadu in the NT off your bucket list because the Gunlom Falls are reopening to tourists after six years. The falls were made famous internationally by the 1986 Crocodile Dundee movie, when they were portrayed as Echo Lake, the spot where Mick Dundee speared a barramundi for Sue Charlton. Visitation was high in the 1980s following the release of the film but in 2019 Kakadu National Park built a walkway near a sacred site without the Traditional Owners' permission, leading to the closure. Once reopened, visitors will be able to make use of a new walkway, and swim in the upper infinity rock pools and enjoy panoramic views of the park. Even better, the reopening will coincide with the remastered version of Crocodile Dundee hitting cinemas in May. kakadutourism.com
