The debut of a well-known hotel group in a sought-after destination is always music to our ears; but we're particularly excited about the launch of Banyan Tree in Kyoto.

Opening in August, the boutique gem with just 52 guestrooms will be located in the city's historic Higashiyama neighbourhood with ancient temples and even older natural hot springs.

In line with the Japanese design sensibilities, rooms are bright, airy and minimalist. More importantly, they're big - even the entry-level abodes offer 48-55 square metres of space, with garden views.
But if you want to upgrade the aspect, ask for the Wellbeing Sanctuary King room which - in addition to a standalone wooden soaking bathtub - offers sweeping city views.
There's is a world-class spa on site and, when it's time to fuel up, head to Bar Ryozen, where you can enjoy Kyoto-style afternoon tea with local delicacies, or book a table at Signature Dining for kaiseki or multi-course Japanese-style feast. banyantree.com/japan/kyoto

My all-time favourite destination is ... New York. You can drop a pin anywhere in Manhattan and start walking in any direction, and the sights and sounds of the city that never stops will begin to stimulate all your senses in an instant.
Next on my bucket list is … Scandinavia - at the peak of summer, when the sun almost never sets.
My top travel tip is … If you’re flying to Sydney from anywhere in the world, pick a window seat far from the wing on the left-hand-side of the aeroplane. If the weather gods and flight path align, you’ll have the most incredible views of the Sydney Harbour and Opera House.
