Here's where to go for top-notch cocktails and bites.

World-class events are about to kick off in the Harbour City - from Vivid Sydney (May 24 to June 15) to Sydney Film Festival (June 5 to 16). And if you're heading to the NSW capital for one of these, don't forget to check out some of the hottest new establishments, starting with Morena, housed in the 150-year-old GPO Building at Martin Place.

Seasoned chef Alejandro Saravia (best known for Farmer's Daughters in Melbourne) is serving up stellar Latin American dishes - from ocean-fresh ceviche prepared table-side to exceptionally delicate ox tongue skewers. Nearby, one of the city's most famous hospitality groups, Merivale, is turning up the heat, too, with not one but two new joints.

Head to Good Luck Restaurant Lounge on Bridge Street for chef Mike Eggert's soy-poached chicken in shisho dressing, or make your way to Jam Record Bar on Georgre Street, which is drawing crowds for both Japanese-inspired snacks as well as for its collection of 15,000 vinyl records. Just don't forget to drop in at Lumiere on Thirty Five on top of Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour for inventive cocktails with a side of water views. sydney.com

Akash is the Deputy Travel Editor for Australian Community Media. He has lived and worked in four cities around the world – Sydney, London, New Delhi and New York – and, at last count, travelled to 42 countries.
My all-time favourite destination is ... New York. You can drop a pin anywhere in Manhattan and start walking in any direction, and the sights and sounds of the city that never stops will begin to stimulate all your senses in an instant.
Next on my bucket list is … Scandinavia - at the peak of summer, when the sun almost never sets.
My top travel tip is … If you’re flying to Sydney from anywhere in the world, pick a window seat far from the wing on the left-hand-side of the aeroplane. If the weather gods and flight path align, you’ll have the most incredible views of the Sydney Harbour and Opera House.
