It’s been nearly three years since Japan has been open to foreign tourists.

But last week, the country finally opened its borders to Australian travellers. Currently, visitors are only allowed to visit Japan on pre-organised tours run by approved agencies. Wendy Wu Tours, which in the past carried the largest number of Australian tour groups to Japan, will be one of the first companies approved to restart.

“With passengers … missing out on the spectacular Japan spring cherry blossom festival, as well as the magnificent autumn foliage colours, demand, particularly for tours in March and April 2023, is quite literally ‘through the roof’, so much so that we’ve added extra capacity for 2023 and 2024, which is selling out as quickly as it goes on sale,” said Wendy Wu, founder of Wendy Wu Tours.

Pre-departure testing is required and the sample collection date must be within 72 hours from flight departure. However, on-arrival tests, quarantine periods and other measures, regardless of vaccination status, will not be required.
