Students, teachers and school leaders gathered at the store to collect their cheques from store owner Ian Mawhood.

The larger schools - St Joseph's, Oberon High and Oberon Public - each received $700 each this year and the smaller schools - Hampton, Black Springs and O'Connell public schools - each received $300.

Over the past eight years a total of $34,900 has been given to community groups and schools.

Supa IGA's Ian Mawhood said the program had been in place since the 1990s and there would have been well over $100,000 go back into the Oberon community in the time since.

"Over the years, Community Chest funds have been donated to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal, Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway, Oberon sporting clubs and Oberon Pool," he said.

St Joseph's School principal Glen Brown said the money would be put towards reading books and maths resources while Oberon Public principal Jo'elle Frampton said her school's money would go towards technology.

Relieving principal from Hampton Public School, Kristyne Smith said the money would go towards an outdoor shade cloth for he school's sand pit.

The IGA Community Chest program works by crediting a percentage of all products purchased with the IGA Community Chest logo to a special account.

During IGA Community Chest catalogue promotion weeks, all products in the catalogue bearing the special IGA Community Chest logo contribute to the "Chest".

The store then selects a beneficiary each year among local community groups, not-for-profit organisations, charities and other worthy causes for the funds raised.

Mr Mawhood said local and district communities "support our business, so it is great to give back".
