Villawood Bendigo Spirit's Tessa Lavey has one goal for her role as captain this season.

To share her knowledge of the game with her teammates.

"I feel my biggest strength as captain is my experience," Lavey said.

"We have a young group this season and I want to make sure that I pass on my experience to help teach the girls all I know about the game."

"Ultimately If I can improve each of the girls in just one element of their game and it makes them better players than what they were at the start of the season, that will be a big tick for me."

Lavey will be joined by Carley Ernst and Amelia Todhunter who will share the role of vice-captain.

"I've played with both Carley and Amelia before and they bring great leadership qualities to the team," Lavey said.

The Spirit start the 2020 season on Thursday night against fellow Victorian team the Southside Flyers, a squad bolstered with several Opals players.

"We have the Flyers first up, but during this season every single team will be challenging and have different strengths on the court," Lavey said.

"The quick turnaround between games and ability to recover is going to be a major factor in how successful teams are this year.

"The key will be to learn from each game, whether we win or lose, and remain accountable.

"That being said, I think there will be plenty of interesting results from the games this year.

"As a player I am certainly looking forward to the challenge and can't wait to get it all started on Thursday against the Flyers."

So far Lavey has embraced the WNBL hub experience and is simply elated that the season is finally about to begin.

"All of this is a real credit to the WNBL, Basketball Australia, the player's association and the hosts for all of the hard work they've put in to making this happen," she said.
