The Christmas Grotto brought a lift to the spirit and joy and laughter from the children at a time when the whole community was under the constant stress and smoke of a huge bushfire which could come roaring over the hill at any moment; the district's farmers were at their wits' end trying to feed and water the livestock they had not been forced to sell off because of the drought; families out of town were living with dry tanks and having to buy water; and townspeople coping with water restrictions were watching their gardens wilt and die in front of them.

Those people of good cheer who willingly gave their time and effort towards creating the Grotto should be heartily praised, not lambasted.
Where was the author's contribution?
As the author of the email is now the (elected/self-appointed?) president of the newly-formed ratepayers association, readers may justifiably ask if they can expect this negative and bah-humbug philosophy to become the norm from the association.
If so, the lofty objectives listed in these pages last week will have little credibility.
