With a population of 5700, the area is well known for its farming and timber industries along with its wealth of activities for locals and visitors alike. The region has four distinct seasons but is popular for its cool summers and snowy winters.
Originally known as Bullock Flat, the area was one of the first genuine rural communities west of the Blue Mountains and when it was officially proclaimed a village in 1863, was renamed Oberon after the King of the Fairies in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
The reasons to visit this beautiful part of the world are many and varied. Some come for the spectacular scenery, Jenolan Caves, Mayfield and other fabulous cool climate gardens, while others enjoy the magic of winter snow, a romantic weekend getaway or simply to experience the quiet, rural lifestyle.
The landscape is dotted with many small, surrounding villages which make the area popular for touring. Places such as Black Springs, Burraga, Hampton, O'Connell, Rockley and Tarana all offer their own take on country life with amazing events to attend, fresh produce to taste, beautiful heritage buildings to discover and friendly locals to help you make the most of your visit.
The region has something to offer everyone whether it's relaxing by a fire with a delicious local wine, crawling through an underground cave or just driving across the countryside taking in the beautiful views.
