A TENDER was awarded, in closed session at Oberon Council's most recent ordinary meeting, to a building contractor to start work on building six independent living units in Oberon.

This will bring the total number of dwellings that will be made available by council for those that need assistance to 22.
The units, to be built in Curtis Street, will consist of three blocks of two units.
When the Hathaway Cottages former aged care facility was sold, the funds realised were dedicated to this project.

Oberon formed an Aged Care Committee in 2008 and started lobbying the state and federal governments for funding for a new facility in Oberon. Hathaway residents were transferred to the new 66-bed Columbia Aged Care facility in 2015 and the cottages were sold in 2017.
Funds from the Althea Johnson Bequest Trust were added to the total funds.

One of the new units will be dedicated to Althea in acknowledgement.
Mayor Kathy Sajowitz said it is "morally incumbent upon council to ensure the most vulnerable in our community are looked after and offered affordable housing opportunities where possible".
