LAST month's Oberon Garden Club talk by Alan and Dianna Van Gaal from Antonia's Irises was very much enjoyed by club members. New plants were bought by some, and we are all much better informed regarding their cultivation.

This was our last meeting with lunch provided, and we now go into our spring meetings with morning tea and regular activities.
The monthly OGY competition was won by Nancy Brown with a display of hellebores. More and more flowers are blooming now, and the competition is getting interesting.
Our seed swap segment is proving very popular, and is a great way to share the bounty of your garden. Bring along any excess seeds or cuttings to share.
One of our new members has suggested we have a trouble-shooting segment in our meeting, so if you have any problems or solutions, come along and let's start a discussion.
This month's meeting will be held at the Uniting Church Hall starting at 10am on Monday, September 16. New members are always welcome.
As long-term gardeners, we have been looking at plant labels for a long time as we wander about nurseries. It was suggested that some of our newer gardeners might feel a bit overwhelmed by the language used in describing plants.
For this reason, Nancy Brown has been asked to give a talk on plant nomenclature. Hopefully, this will help to understand the characteristics of plants - their shape, colour, growth habit, preferred habitat, origin and appearance, as well as the system used to name plants.
Obviously, if you wish to track down a specific plant, you need to know the genus name followed by the species name. After that, you can go looking for a particular cultivar.
In no time at all, you should be able to select the right plant to go in shallow soil in a rockery with restricted space - all by reading the label! And I am sure you'll find you know a lot more Latin words than you thought you did.
