Chifley Police District Chief Inspector Gerard Powell said some motorists ignored the alpine alerts.
"Drive to the conditions and if the roads are closed, don't drive on them," he pleaded.
Chief Inspector Powell said all too often drivers underestimate how challenging it can be to drive on a road covered with snow and ice.
"I don't think they realise the difficulty of driving on an icy and snowy roads," he said.
"They think it's like mud, but they don't realise how difficult it can be and ice poses all sorts of problems."
