A SEVERE weather warning is in place for damaging winds and an approaching cold front for Lithgow, Oberon and Katoomba.

The overnight alert was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology ahead of the predicted weather situation.

"Vigorous west to northwesterly winds are expected to develop ahead of an approaching cold front," the alert states.

"This front is forecast to cross southern NSW during Thursday.

"Another cold front is expected to cross the state between Friday and Saturday with winds only easing after the passage of the second front."

From Thursday morning damaging winds, averaging 60km/h to 70km/h, with peak gusts in excess of 90km/h, are likely to impact some areas below 1900 metres.

Winds are forecast to ease during Saturday following the passage of the second cold front.

The other locations which may be affected include: Katoomba, Thredbo, Perisher, Nowra, Bowral, Batemans Bay, Braidwood, Moruya Heads, Goulburn and Cooma.

The State Emergency Service (SES) advises that people should:

  • Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
  • Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
