I WISH to correct a misrepresentation made by Donna Russo of Gingkin in your letters last week (“Why divide this town?”, August 16).

Ms Russo claims a couple of years ago “at an Oberon Business and Tourism meeting, he [Councillor Don Capel] said we should just move on and accept the amalgamation with Bathurst”.
I want to assure your readers that I have not ever expressed that view in any forum or indeed privately. I have always believed in the importance of keeping local government local.
I spoke strongly against amalgamation at every opportunity where I was able to speak of my experience with councils in the north west of the state which had been amalgamated.
I also take the opportunity to comment on Ms Russo’s statement about the number of people from outside Oberon in support of fluoridation.
Those personnel were almost exclusively health professionals who have experience working with Oberon people.
Their observations, in some cases made over many years, as well as their advice, helped me make my decision on the fluoride question.
