Originally starting back in 1989 as a NSW government initiative, it has since grown to be a week long festival for young people in every state and territory across the country.

Known as Generation Z, today’s children, teenagers and young adults are tech-savvy and innovative. They have never known life without smart phones or computers and have been able to ask Google or Siri any question they wanted an answer to.
They are engaged in social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram and spend countless hours watching and uploading clips to YouTube.
According to generationz.com.au, “Gen Z is part of a generation that is global, social, visual and technological. They are the most connected, educated and sophisticated generation ever. They are the up-agers, with influence beyond their years”.
They are the brand influencers, the social media drivers, the pop-culture leaders. They comprise nearly two billion people globally, and they don’t just represent the future, they’re creating it

The ongoing success of Youth Week is that the community based events are organised by young people, for young people.
Following the achievements of the NSW Youth Week program, Youth Week became a national event in 2000 and is supported by local, state and national governments.
National Youth Week is an opportunity for young people to:
- share ideas
- attend live events
- have their voices heard on issues of concern to them
- showcase their talents
- celebrate their contribution to the community
- take part in competitions
- have fun
