It’s been open for well over a year and the new Learning to Fly MX motocross track has been a huge hit with the Oberon community since opening on December 27, 2016.

The motocross facility, located 26 kilometres south of Oberon at Shooters Hill, took nine years, 15,000 man hours and 400,000 tonnes of earth moved to build, with Tania Weekes explaining over 3500 riders have already been through the gates to use the complex.
“Ninety-eight per cent of those [numbers] are tourists,” she said.
“These numbers are great for our local community. We are seeing guests from as far away as north-east Queensland and Western Australia.”
While Ms Weekes explained the numbers are great for the local community, Mark Weekes said the numbers are great for the sport.
“It shows the motocross community is alive and well and they’re all willing to ride legally in a controlled, safe environment, as opposed to illegal forest riding which in the past has tarnished the appearance of our sport,” he said.
“All riders ever wanted was an area to enjoy their sport and to stay focused on a good healthy lifestyle.
“Learning to Fly MX [LFMX] is focused on entry level motocross, to introduce newcomers into this great sport as a community member. It’s extremely important to do what we can to help the youth of today.”
One example of the importance of helping the youth of today came in the form of Stanwell Park’s Ryder Wilson.
“I tripped over Ryder at LFMX. We sponsored Ryder in the way of training, top-shelf safety apparel and lots of positive encouragement,” Mr Weekes said.
“Within one year, Ryder won the Australia East Coast series, he won the King of the Valley (Sydney basin) title and was unlucky not to win the Australian titles, settling for second place.
“The Wilson family have decided to pack their bags and move to Vancouver, to knock on the American motocross door. We should be very proud that Oberon was a big part of his story. This kid is beating every competitor he comes across.
“If luck is on his side, he could be Australia’s new Chad Reed. It just goes to show if we show encouragement to our young, anything can be achieved.”
Mr Weekes is encouraging all local youth and families to come and enjoy the motocross facility.
No licences are required and five circuits are available at the track.
“Everyone is welcome at Learning to Fly MX,” Mr Weekes said.
Bookings are required if heading out to the track.
