Blaze New Trails is the 2018 theme for Catholic Schools Week. It is an exciting year for our school as Pope Francis announced 2018 as the year of the youth.
This provides us the opportunity to celebrate the great young people of Oberon and the wonderful contribution they have in the community.
St Joseph’s has a proud tradition of celebrating the unique gifts of all children. It is this celebration that empowers children to continue to grow as confident young adults in the future. It is our dedication to all aspects of the child and their families that allows for children to achieve well beyond their wildest expectations.
Students have a great love for the school and this was demonstrated in an interview I conducted with Kindergarten students Aurora and Max, and Year 6 students Ella and Tanisha.
I hadn’t started the interview when Tanisha said, “The teachers at St Joseph’s are very kind.” Then a booming voice from Aurora yells, “and it is so FUN!” Ella continued the conversation by highlighting how much she loves coming to learn with all her friends. She also commented on how many opportunities there are at St Joseph’s like learning guitar. Now I finally get to ask my question, “What do you love about St Joseph’s?” Max replies, “I love sport and jumping, and today I had a running race at lunch.” Over the rest of the conversation it was affirming to hear how proud our students were to be at St Joseph’s.

The school is driven by its Vision Statement: all students learn at high levels in a nurturing, collaborative and Christ-centred environment. By working collaboratively in professional learning teams, every staff member is committed to ensuring each student receives every possible opportunity to reach their full potential academically, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Students have ample opportunity to participate in sporting programs at local, diocesan and state levels in both individual and team sports. Students with an interest in the performing and visual arts are also well catered for through Performing Arts Programs and involvement in community initiatives.
Our commitment to student-centred programs has seen the ongoing development of our Kinder Start Program to ensure student readiness for Kindergarten. Out of School Hours Care program, in collaboration with Centacare, provides a much-needed service to the Oberon community.
