Could it be our great touring roads and by-ways, the spectacular countryside, gardens, friendly locals, good food or good service? It’s all of those reasons and more.
Recently the Western Districts Historic Vehicle Club, located in Geelong, Victoria, visited Oberon for an extended stay to experience all that our district has to offer.
Activities included extended road runs taking in Oberon’s stunning scenery, including a visit to Mayfield Garden.
The group visited Barry Hughes’ Tractor Orphanage - a collection of tractors and trucks, all restored by a very dedicated Barry Hughes. They marvelled at the high degree of restoration on each tractor and couldn’t believe Barry’s collection of memorabilia as well as his life history painstakingly depicted across the shed walls.
Club members also visited the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway Inc’s restoration and refurbishment of the historic Oberon Railway precinct and were fascinated to hear the history of the railway line and its very close connection to the town from 1923 to 1979. The group was in awe of OTHR’s dedication and sheer determination to make the line a viable tourist attraction.
Members of the car club also visited Rydal for the daffodil festival, Jenolan Caves and Katoomba during their stay.
Being from Victoria, most of the club members hadn’t heard of Oberon before, let alone Mayfield Garden. It had been years since many of them had been to Jenolan Caves and Katoomba, and some had never been before.
“We were stunned by the sheer beauty and magnitude of Mayfield Garden, although we only visited the Water Garden. The quality and workmanship was undeniable,” group leader Fred Harris said.
“The group thoroughly enjoyed the Jenolan Caves as well as Katoomba and the Hydro Majestic Hotel. We simply can’t believe there are so many attractions on the doorstep of a small country town.
“Oberon is such a beautiful town and it’s certain that many of us are coming back to view the larger Mayfield Garden on their open days.”
Meanwhile, the Austin 7 Club of NSW was also in town on the same weekend at the invitation of a couple of its local members.
Although the weather wasn’t kind to the hardy members and their very original mini cars, they nevertheless had a great time experiencing the beauty and friendliness of the town.
The Austin 7 Club also visited the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway and the Tarana Hotel in Tarana village for a hearty country lunch.
The Tarana Hotel is very popular with visitors and locals alike, especially on weekends.
