A good field played an 18-hole stableford event on Saturday. A cold, blustery wind made scoring difficult.
Laurie Murphy continued his run of good form and handled the conditions well to win A grade with a good score (under the conditions) of 36 points. Brian Roberts was the runner-up on a countback with 36 points. Mick McKechnie had a superb round of 42 points to easily win B grade. Bill Edwards would be disappointed he was only runner-up with 40 points.
Nearest the pin on the first went to Darren Gordon at four metres, Brian Roberts was just two metres from the seventh, Bill Edwards won the ninth and Darren Gordon was on the mark to win the 17th. Balls went to Barry Lang, Peter Dale and Linore Zamparini.
On Sunday, Oberon hosted the Blue Mountains Championships. The size of the field was disappointing, but the quality was strong. There was a strong contingent from Lithgow, headed by former Oberon player Max Nightingale. Andrew Burton from Lithgow played a fine round of 69 to win. He is the Blue Mountains Champion of 2017. Johno Vanveen was the scratch runner-up with a solid round of 75. A grade handicap winner was Max Nightingale with a nett 70 and Robert Hayden was the nett runner-up with 72. B grade nett winner was Dick Mara with 73 and runner-up was Brett Scanlan with 74 on a countback.
Max Nightingale was the veterans scratch winner and Steve Rabone was the nett veterans winner on 74. Super Seniors was won by Murray Paterson from Wentworth Falls Country Club. Dick Mara was the runner-up. Chas Richie was the junior winner with 89. Nearest the pin on the first was Barry Simpson, Chris Holmes won the seventh, Chris Rumble took the ninth and local John Crichton excelled to win the 17th.
Golf next Saturday will be an 18-hole par event. Recent heavy winds have blown a lot of sticks and bark about the course. If you have some time it would be a good way to make a contribution to the club by helping to clear some of this rubbish.
