The NSW Government’s amalgamation process led to Auburn City Council, Holroyd City Council and parts of Parramatta City Council being amalgamated to form Cumberland Council.
Correspondence has been received from Cumberland Council asking if Oberon Council wants to continue the sister city arrangement it had with the former Auburn City Council.
The recommendation to continue the arrangement was carried at Oberon Council's August meeting.
Following the establishment of a sister council relationship with the Eceabat Council in Turkey in 2007, Oberon Council decided that it wanted to link into the Turkish community in Australia.
Oberon Council approached Auburn Council to see if it would be interested in a sister council relationship to create opportunities to liaise with the Turkish community at Auburn.
This relationship was reaffirmed by Auburn City Council in November 2015.
In more recent years, Oberon Council has established connections, along with the Oberon RSL Sub-branch, with the Turkish community in Auburn through the Australian Ataturk Cultural Centre.
