Orange CYMS under 18s coach Scott Sullivan is acutely aware the job for his green and golds juniors is only half done after claiming the 2017 minor premiership.
Sullivan’s side was dominant in claiming this year’s first piece of silverware, finishing six points clear on top of the ladder – Bathurst St Pat’s was second.
The Saints take on Bathurst Panthers in the qualifying semi-final at Carrington Park on Sunday, the winner earning the right to take on CYMS at Wade Park in the major semi-final in two week’s time.
And that’s where Sullivan’s side’s focus is – on the post season, not any sort of regular season heroics.
“We’ve been really good this year. It’s a talented bunch, which, as a coach, makes things really easy,” Sullivan said.
“But I like to think I’m pretty honest with the boys, and we haven’t won anything yet. We’ve got four more weeks of hard work ahead of us.”
Helping Sullivan instill some resolve in CYMS’ gun under 18s group is last year’s finals disaster.
CYMS went through the regular season undefeated in 2016, but ultimately lost both the major semi-final and the preliminary final to bow out of the premiership race in straight sets.
“We’ve got the right attitude this year. There’s been some chinks in the armour, but we’ve worked hard to rectify those and the boys are focused,” Sullivan said.
