Mark Kellam, who has lived in Oberon for six years, says he will contest the election on September 9.

Mr Kellam, who served in the navy for 40 years, said he moved to Oberon because of the four distinct seasons and for a little piece of land they could not resist.

"We lived all over the world and Australia, but Oberon was where we decided to settle,” he said.

"I have lots of experience in managing difficult organisations. I'm semi-retired, but still work as a consultant for an engineering company. I have the time and I have something to offer to council.

"Oberon Council dodged a bullet in the amalgamation debacle and council must really work hard to make sure they are the best they could be.

"Council needs stability and must use their money wisely for financial stability.

"We need to be the best at everything we possibly could be."

Mr Kellam said with industrial growth and land development, Oberon is booming.

"We need to attract a younger age group to the area - land prices are affordable for families and there's employment,” he said.

He said he will be available to listen to the citizens of Oberon and engage with the community.

"If I can do that, I can contribute to council."​
