In the past, there have been many tales of woe concerning this piece of road. Now, the widening and sealing have transformed the road into something to be proud of - instead of the narrow, inadequate and dangerous track we had before. That part of the road that runs through the Oberon Council district now allows for a safe, pleasant drive, and accidents are less common despite a huge increase in traffic.
The Oberon Review has often celebrated the overall improvement of the road and referred to the relevant parties responsible but let's not forget that the main protagonist in the saga that dragged this Main Road 256 into the 21st century was John McKinnon. He doggedly lobbied politicians and initially mobilised council and other local individuals to work towards its upgrade. Users of the road and Oberon merchants owe him a significant vote of thanks.
Upper Lachlan Council plans to build a new bridge across the Abercrombie River later this year. This will be very welcome, considering those times when the bridge has been underwater and travellers from Oberon have been unaware before leaving town. Let's hope the Oberon Council road on the northern side of the valley has set the standard and Upper Lachlan Council will provide a similar facelift for the road on its side very soon.
