The Perkins V8 diesel fire pump set, which was one of three, was recently retired from active service at the Borg MDF plant.
These venerable engines had provided water for the fire systems across the plant since 1988, but have been replaced by more modern systems.
Rather than see the engines lost forever, it was decided that Mr Hughes’ extensive collection would benefit from receiving one of the engines as a permanent display item that has historic links to the Oberon MDF facility.
“Oberon’s Tractor Orphanage”, as Mr Hughes’ collection is known, includes a large collection of tractors and rare pieces of machinery.
Items include a timber orchard sprayer and seed planter.
Mr Hughes opens his collection, which also includes photographs of local legends out in the field with their machinery, for viewing at the annual Highlands Steam and Vintage Fair.
